Darryl:

There are no statements I can think of that are more frightening than:

"I started looking at your hard drive this morning. I can't see it in the normal way. Windows says it is not formatted. I am currently wiping another hard drive large enough for me to image yours to so I can take a look at it using forensic tools. It will probably be late afternoon before I know if any of your data can be saved. I'll keep you posted." [e-mail from D. Daniels to R. Easton]

On the other hand, the statement that can make a person believe in miracles [also in an e-mail from D. Daniels to R. Easton] is:

"I am copying all of your recovered data to the final CD. You can come by and pick it up any time." !!!!

The files on that hard disk belonged to my wife and to me. What you recovered included special medical forms & data, business correspondence, personal letters, password lists, installation keys (without which certain programs will not run), program updates, utilities and numerous other files. We were sure it was all safely backed up … until the computer crashed and I unplugged the external drive on which they were supposedly saved. Apparently the quirky way in which the drive was partitioned made the data "disappear." Obviously, that was a very unusual circumstance that I would never have been able to diagnose or know how to fix. I just thought we had lost it all.

The thorough, meticulous and efficient way you worked your magic on that drive is impressive. I have now restored all the recovered files (on two separate drives!) and everything that was "lost" is now back in place. Fran and I thank you for your professional expertise and your ability to restore our professional practice and personal lives to normality.

Sincerely,
Richard Edwin Easton, MD

PS: I now have double back-ups of everything.
